Macapá is the capital of Amapá state in northern Brazil, located exactly on the Equator. It is uniquely isolated with no connecting highways to the rest of Brazil with access being limited to planes and boats. The city is located on the northern banks of the Amazon river.

After years of missionary experience and church planting in Brazil Lucas and Christine Huber felt called to reach the many unreached villages throughout the Amazon Basin.

The Amazon was one of the largest unreached areas in the world, with thousands of isolated communities lacking access to the Gospel, education, medical care, and basic resources. Their vision was to plant churches in these villages by discipling and training Brazilian leaders who could reach their own communities.

What began as the “AmaZon Project” soon grew into a church-planting movement. The Hubers established churches in Santarém and surrounding river communities, trained national missionaries, built boats to reach remote villages, and developed training camps and discipleship programs.

In 1994, Lucas Huber tragically died in a plane accident at the age of 44. At the time, there were already hundreds of PAZ churches and many missionary boats serving communities throughout the Amazon. Rather than stopping the movement, his death became a catalyst for even greater church growth.

Today, PAZ International continues the original vision: reaching the Amazon, planting churches throughout Brazil, and taking the Gospel to the nations. The movement has expanded into several countries and continues to train and empower national leaders to plant and multiply healthy churches.

The story of PAZ is ultimately a story of God’s faithfulness—a church-planting movement that began in a small city in the Amazon and continues to grow around the world.

And this is just the beginning.
